Book Review: Child of the Northern Spring by Persia Woolley

About the Book:

Among the first to look at the story of Camelot through Guinevere’s eyes, Woolley sets the traditional tale in the time of its origin, after Britain has shattered into warring fiefdoms. Hampered by neither fantasy nor medieval romance, this young Guinevere is a feisty Celtic tomboy who sees no reason why she must learn to speak Latin, wear dresses, and go south to marry that king. But legends being what they are, the story of Arthur’s rise to power soon intrigues her, and when they finally meet, Guinevere and Arthur form a partnership that has lasted for 1500 years.
This is Arthurian epic at its best—filled with romance, adventure, authentic Dark Ages detail, and wonderfully human people.

About the Author:

As an only child born during the Depression, telling myself stories became my chief form of entertainment. In college I chose to study Architecture rather than English, however, and it wasn't until I was in my 30s that I began to make my living with words, first in public relations, then as a critic and reviewer, a TV writer, producer and interviewer. Was also a print journalist before settling into writing books.

I am what's called a 'euhemerist'--a person who believes that legends begin with real people doing something in real time which then gets embroidered through generations of retelling into iconic form. Approaching legends this way gives me a chance to indulge my love of research, human nature, word-smithing and creative play. Happily, my readers seem to enjoy the results.

My Opinion:

I have to state up front that I love all tales Arthur. This book takes a new look by telling the legend from Guinevere's point of view. How refreshing! It was such a delight to meet her as a young girl, then a strong young woman riding out to meet her fate with questions and a bit of disquiet at leaving all she knows.

The book is written in such an easy way I found myself lost in the story; lost in time. I found that I really enjoyed getting to know this Guinevere. Most times when reading of Arthur Guinevere is an adjunct to him rather than her own person. In this book, the first of a trilogy, she is definitely as in charge as she can be.

I am very much looking forward to the next books so I can follow her adventure. It will be interesting to see how Ms. Woolley writes of Lancelot and all that befalls Camelot from Guinevere's point of view.

Holiday 2010 - Giveaway: Sonic the Hedgehog in Sonic Colors for Nintendo DS

I am too old for video games but that does not mean I don't know the characters. I do have a bunch of
nieces and nephews.
Sonic the Hedgehog is one cute little character.

He has a new game out called Sonic Colors and one lucky Broken Teepee reader is going to win a copy of the Nintendo DS version. This a great family game as it is rated E for everyone.

Here is some information about the game:

The diabolical Dr. Eggman has hatched another plan for world domination! He has built an amazing interstellar amusement park, floating in space around Sonic’s home planet, bursting with incredible rides and attractions. However, all is not as it seems as Dr. Eggman has abducted an alien race called Wisps and is harnessing their colorful energy to fuel a sinister plot. However, before Dr. Eggman completes his evil plans, Sonic discovers his mysterious theme park in space. When he arrives, Sonic finds he is also able to use these alien powers and is ready to help! Sonic will need all his speed and skill as he faces this test, but, empowered by the alien energy, it’s a test he’ll pass with flying colors!

Book Review: A Darcy Christmas by Sharon Lathan, Amanda Grange and Carolyn Eberhart

About the Book:

Mr. and Mrs. Darcy Wish You a Very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
Share in the magic of the season in these three warm and wonderful holiday novellas from bestselling authors.

Christmas Present
by Amanda Grange
A Darcy Christmas
by Sharon Lathan
Mr. Darcy’s Christmas Carol
by Carolyn Eberhart

My Opinion:

This book has three novellas featuring Elizabeth Bennet and Fitzwilliam Darcy. I continue to be amazed at the number of books that continue the story of these two Austen favorites.  I must admit that I was not drawn in to the first tale I read, Mr. Darcy's Christmas Carol. It follows the familiar plot of Dickens' story but instead of Mr. Scrooge we have Mr. Darcy being visited by the three ghosts of Christmases Past, Present and Future. I just found it silly and difficult to finish.

The second one, Christmas Present was more enjoyable. It tells the tale of a happily married Elizabeth and Darcy heading off to the Bingley's to see their new baby. Elizabeth is pregnant herself and due any day. The whole Bennet family is also coming for the holiday and on the way they bump into more familiar Pride and Prejudice characters that make the story fun and true to form.  This was a light, happy holiday read.

The third tale, A Darcy Christmas was a bit of good and not so good. Mr. Darcy is admiring a portrait of his family that he had painted and it causes him to reflect on many of the Christmases he has spent with and without Elizabeth in his life.  There are some unnecessary and odd sexual overtones that just don't fit into Austen's milieu and that could have been left out with no detriment to the plot. Beyond that this was a delightful exercise in reflecting on a life happily lived.

I was sent a delightful selection of products to review including:
Chocolate Cupcakes - Gluten Free

These I put right in the freezer as suggested since I wasn't going to eat them right away. When I did get to eating them I must admit that I ate a couple frozen and MMMMM, I have now discovered a new taste treat - frozen cupcake. They are also delicious thawed; rich, moist and full of good chocolate flavor.

Chocolate Dipped Cookies - Gluten Free

You know you want these

Erm, these were so good they didn't last out the hour.
'Nuff said.

Chocolate Chip Cookies - Gluten Free

These were good but the chocolate dipped cookies were SOOOOO good I wanted these to be them if you know what I mean. I probably should have put them in the freezer and tried them when the other cookies were a faded memory.

Chocolate Strip - Gluten Free

This went in the freezer as well and when it came out it tasted just as fresh as if it had been baked that morning. Very, dark rich chocolate flavor here.

I saved my favorite for last.
Chocolate Rugelach - Gluten Free

OMG! These are to die for. I was a ravening beast. I didn't even let the hubby get close. I think I might have slapped his hand away. That was rude, wasn't it?
They were THAT good. Light, flaky pastry with a cinnamony chocolate rolled up inside.
Mmmmmm!

On The Third Day of Chocolate: Pamela's Products Review and Giveaway

I suspect from the theme of this giveaway event you can figure out that I love chocolate.
Mmmmm, chocolate.

Pamela's Products has a full line of yummy products including many that are - all together now -

CHOCOLATE!

Pamela's Products was started for people with allergies here is some information from the site:

I spent my summers in my family’s bakery, packing rice and soy cookies for people with special dietary needs. Although these dry, tasteless cookies were in high demand, they were not particularly appetizing. At a young age, I could relate to those who had to eat these “weird” foods. I imagined life with food allergies and without the joys a great chocolate chip cookie. I pondered my own enjoyment of cookies and food and contemplated what life would be like if all I could eat were the rice and soy cookies I packed everyday. I suggested making the wheat-free and gluten-free cookies taste better, but I was told that “the allergy people were fine and happy to have something”. Back then the Health Food Industry was much less interested in taste. Health food was known to be dry, hard, and crumbly but always nutritious.
In 1988, after college I left the family business to start my own independent company founded on the premise that wheat-free and gluten-free foods can taste great and that everyone should have food delicious enough to celebrate. My company, Pamela’s Products, continues to lead the industry with award winning decadent and delicious gluten-free foods.

I will attest right here and now that the two items I was sent to sample were DELICIOUS and if I had not been told I never would have known they were gluten free.

The first yummy product I tried was the Extreme Chocolate Simplebite. It was a small bite of crispy on the outside but still chewy chocolately goodness. I erm, ate the whole bag - well almost. I did let hubby eat one or two and he liked them as well.

I was also sent the Chocolate Brownie Mix. I saved this for one night when I had company for dinner. It was very easy to make; I just mixed it up in the bowl with some oil and water (there are several variations for how you would like your brownies to come out)

Baked them

Then I cut them into circles with my biscuit cutter

Topped the circles with goat's milk ice cream

Added some cherries

Then a balsamic syrup.

Mmmm. It was a hit. The brownie was rich, fudgey and decadent. A perfect base for the rest of the dessert.

Thanks to Pamela's Products one lucky winner will also get to try the Extreme Chocolate Simplebites and Chocolate Brownie Mix.

Her food was always so good.

Blog Tour and Book Review: Of Honest Fame by M.M. Bennetts

About the Book:

On a summer night in 1812, a boy sets fire to a house in Paris before escaping over the rooftops.  Carrying vital intelligence about Napoleon’s Russian campaign, he heads for England.  But landing in Kent, he is beaten almost to death.
The Foreign Secretary, Lord Castlereagh, is desperate for the boy’s information.  He is even more desperate, however, to track down the boy’s assailant – a sadistic French agent who knows far too much about Castlereagh’s intelligence network.

Captain George Shuster is a veteran of the Peninsula, an aide-de-camp to Wellington, now recalled from the continent and struggling to adjust to civilian life.  Thomas Jesuadon is a dissolute, living on the fringes of society, but with an unrivalled knowledge of the seamy underside of the capital.  Setting out to trace the boy’s attacker, they journey from the slums of London to the Scottish coast, following a trail of havoc, betrayal, official incompetence and murder.  It takes an unlikely encounter with a frightened young woman to give them the breakthrough that will turn the hunter into the hunted.

Meanwhile, the boy travels the breadth of Europe in the wake of the Grande ArmĆ©e, witnessing at first hand the ruination they leave behind and the awful price of Napoleon’s ambition.

This companion to M.M. Bennetts’s brilliant debut, May 1812, is a gripping account of deception, daring and determination, of intelligence and guile pitted against brutality.  Bennetts brings to vivid life the harrowing devastation wrought on the civilian populations of Europe by Napoleon’s men, and the grit, courage and tenacity of those who stood against them.

About the Author:

Educated at Boston University and St Andrews, M.M. Bennetts is a specialist in the economic, social and military history of Napoleonic Europe. The author is a keen cross-country and dressage rider, as well as an accomplished pianist, regularly performing music of the era as both a soloist and accompanist. Bennetts is a long-standing book critic for The Christian Science Monitor.

The author is married and lives in England.

My Opinion:

I have to admit to a bit of confusion at the start of this book. It took me a bit to figure out who was who and where they fit in to the story but once I did that and adjusted to the cadence of the writing I found myself lost in story full of page turning intrigue. And not the whitewashed type you get in some novels, the real look over your shoulder because someone is trying to kill you intrigue.

The plot built very slowly and carefully and the story was better for it. This is a thinking person's book. A book to make you think - about history and the atrocities of war. It was an excellent read but not an easy read. I would really like to get my hands on the first book by the author, May, 1812 to see what came before and see if it gives me any insight into the characters and how they interact and just plain act in this book.

An excellent book for someone who truly loves history and how people react to war.

Happy Thanksgiving

I want to wish everyone a very Happy Thanksgiving.

This year, at least weatherwise is just like our first Thanksgiving in Montana. That was 2006 and we had a storm that dropped a foot of snow on the ground on 11/24.

Yesterday, on 11/23, I woke to a foot of snow on the ground. In spite of the cold - this morning it was 10 below by our thermometer - it is truly beautiful.

Due to the river being warmer than the surrounding air a mist dances on its surface.

The mountains are covered in a blanket of white.

But the yurt is toasty and warm.

The natural beauty in this part of the country is astounding and I marvel at it every day.

I hope you are all warm and surrounded by beauty today. I miss my family and will be calling them later in the day.

HAPPY THANKSGIVING from me and the hubby, Pricilla and the Happy Goats and the Farm cats.

Book Review: The Final Edition by Lawrence Meyer

About the Book:

The Final Edition is the compelling novel about an American newspaper and the family that runs it, from the Civil War to the end of the 20th century. It is a tale of family intrigue, behind the scenes politics and all-too-human historical personalities: Beginning as the Civil War ends, it tells the story of the American century, the heyday of newspapers. For the next 60 years newspapers were the source—the only source—of information about politics and sports, scandal and tragedy. No informed American could afford to be without one. Neither radio nor television dislodged the dominance of newspapers in informing America. Newspaper publishers were political aristocrats, wielding enormous power; newspaper families were among the social elite in cities across America. The Final Edition is the story of a great newspaper, the Washington Sentinel, “a watchman in the night,” fearlessly protecting the public interest above all. Spanning five generations, it is also the story of the family that builds and then is destroyed by it. In this unique novel, former Washington Post reporter Lawrence Meyer brings American history to life in a powerful story that will captivate readers of all ages.
In 1867, after four devastating years of civil war, the United States is a nation profoundly changed. When ambitious young Brewster Hopkins purchases the Washington Sentinel, he transforms the floundering newspaper into “a watchman in the night” for the new America, protecting the public interest above all. A progressive and principled publisher, Brewster gradually builds a powerful and successful media empire, befriending business leaders and presidents along the way. When Brewster dies, though, the Sentinel becomes a battleground for the Hopkins family, as the heirs jockey for power, money, and influence.

Brewster’s only son, the philandering reactionary Alexander Hopkins, pushes his sisters aside to seize control, reversing many of the policies Brewster championed in life. Just as it seems Alexander may destroy the Sentinel’s prestige by supporting Nazi Germany, an unexpected tragedy puts his son-in-law, George Baker, in charge. As war looms, George becomes a confidant of President Franklin Roosevelt. He steers the Sentinel back on course; but it is his seeming ne’er do well son, Cubby, Brewster’s great-grandson, who most embodies the great patriarch’s journalistic vision. Family conflict flares up once again as Cubby’s sisters challenge their brother’s controversial editorial stands, threatening to destroy the mighty Sentinel once and for all.
Spanning more than a century, The Final Edition presents the most pivotal moments of nineteenth- and twentieth-century American history. Presidents Teddy Roosevelt, Franklin D. Roosevelt, Dwight Eisenhower and John Kennedy are among the key figures whose lives are woven into the fabric of this compelling and informative novel. Written by a veteran former Washington Post reporter, The Final Edition offers readers a richly detailed glimpse behind the scenes of a fictional but all too real American newspaper, bringing exciting moments in American history to life. It is a story as current and relevant as today’s headlines, as a great newspaper struggles to survive. Most importantly, it is the epic story of one powerful family’s rise and fall, a gripping portrait of an American dynasty that will captivate readers from start to finish.

About the Author:

Lawrence Meyer is a veteran, award-winning newspaper reporter and editor. He spent thirty-two years at The Washington Post, where he witnessed many of the twentieth century’s most dramatic events. During the 1970s, he covered the attempted assassination of Governor George C. Wallace, the Watergate break-in trial, the Senate Watergate hearings, and the subsequent impeachment proceedings against President Richard Nixon. His intimate familiarity with the thinking and politics at the heart of a great American newspaper lends remarkable accuracy and immediacy to The Final Edition. Meyer has published three other books. His second novel, False Front, was nominated for the American Book Award.

My Opinion:

I suspect I am a dying breed; I still love to read a newspaper in the morning. Since I am a dying breed, that is why the newspaper industry is slowly dying. This book, though tells the tale of the RISE of a great newspaper; the fictional Sentinel. Being a newspaper lover I was very intrigued when given the opportunity to review this book. I am so very happy I did because this was an excellent read.

It is a big book. A book to really sink your teeth into full of big characters and big stories since it starts at the end of the Civil War with Lincoln's assassination and follows the history of the country and the paper for over 100 years.

It is well written and a delight. At the time of its beginnings newspapers were the only source of news for the populace. There was no radio, no TV and no internet. They were vital. As other media became more prominent the newspaper started to decline. That tale is also told through family infighting and bad decision making therein. This is a dynastic tale too - and one to be savored.

While this is not a book to be read in a day - it has almost 700 pages -  it is a book to be read and enjoyed.

The Final Edition is available at Amazon.com

Now, about the book:

AN IMAGINARY FRIEND
Jane Margaux is a lonely little girl. Her mother, the powerful head of a New York theater company, makes time for her only once a week, for their Sunday trip to admire jewelry at Tiffany's. Jane has only one friend: a handsome, comforting, funny man named Michael. He's perfect. But only she can see him. Michael can't stay forever, though. On Jane's eighth birthday he leaves, promising that she'll forget him soon. He was there to help her until she was old enough to manage on her own, and now there are other children who need his help.

AN UNEXPECTED LOVE
Years later, in her thirties, Jane is just as alone as she was as a child. And despite her own success as a playwright, she is even more trapped by her overbearing mother. Then she meets Michael again--as handsome, smart and perfect as she remembers him to be. But not even Michael knows the reason they've really been reunited.

AND AN UNFORGETTABLE TWIST
Sundays at Tiffany's is a heart-wrenching love story that surpasses all expectations of why these people have been brought together. With the breathtaking momentum and gripping emotional twists that have made James Patterson a bestseller all over the world, Sundays at Tiffany's takes an altogether fresh look at the timeless and transforming power of love.

About the Authors:

The subject of a recent Time magazine feature called, "The Man Who Can't Miss," James Patterson is the bestselling author of the past year, bar none, with more than 16 million books sold in North America alone.  In 2007, one of every 15 hardcover fiction books sold was a Patterson title.  In total, James's books have sold an estimated 150 million copies worldwide.  He is the first author to have #1 new titles simultaneously on The New York Times adult and children's lists and is the only author to have five new hardcover novels debut at #1 on the list in one year — a record-breaking feat he’s accomplished every year since 2005.  To date, James Patterson has had nineteen consecutive #1 New York Times Bestselling Novels, and holds the New York Times record for most bestselling titles by a single author (40 total).

Gabrielle Charbonnet also writes children's books. She lives in North Carolina.

Blog Tour and Review: Care for Creation by Christy Baldwin

About Care for Creation:

"Christy Balwin's Care for Creation is a charming story that teaches children how to care for our environment in a fun and loving way. The colorful illustrations and inspiring verses from the Bible will delight both children and adults. The book is a powerful tool for families that shows how living responsibly can make a difference in our world!"

- Tony Townsley, inspiration for Three Cups

"Care for Creation by Christy Baldwin backs up the modern theme of Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle with the Biblical messages passed down from our Creator. From the time of Adam and Eve, men and women have been called to care for the Lord’s creations. In this meaningful and inspiring book, children learn how easy and important it is to do their part."

- Cheryl C. Malandrinos, author of Little Shepherd

About the Author:

Writing has been a passion of Christy's since she was very young. As a child, she loved to write stories for her grandfather and poems just for fun. She lives in Mason, Ohio with her family and is active in church, Boy Scouts, Girls Scouts and volunteering with various organizations. Christy has a bachelor's degree in Elementary Education from Cedarville University and a master's degree in Special Education from the University of Scranton. She is a stay at home mom who enjoys spending time with her kids and being involved in their schools. Her previous children's titles include Nine Things Nathan Noticed at Night and Remembering Wilma.

My Opinion:

This is a sweet tale that shows children the importance of caring for the environment. It includes Bible verses that correspond to the various themes; water conservation, caring for animals, taking care of the earth.  The illustrations are colorful and endearing.  At the end of the book you will find some great ideas for activities you can do with your children to take the lessons learned in the book and put them to use like picking up trash in a local park or starting a garden.  All in all a good book to get the kids on board with caring for our Earth.

Care for Creation is available in hardcover, PDF or e-book form at Tribute Books.

Disclosure:  I received a PDF of Care for Creation gratis. Any opinions expressed are my honest opinions and were not impacted by my receipt of the free PDF. I received no monetary compensation for this post.

Holiday 2010 - Review: Fun Stocking Stuffer from Eden Fantastys - MATURE EYES CLICK THROUGH PLEASE

One of my big pleasures in life - especially in this cold weather - is to soak in my tub.
I don't do it very often because it uses so much water.
Water is scarce here in the West and I don't like to waste it.

But there are times I just hurt and I need that soak.
So when I do soak I want to make the most out of it.
Thanks to  Eden Fantasys Rose Petal Soap Flakes last night's soak was like being in a rose garden.

Mmmm, roses. I love the smell of roses and these soap flakes did not disappoint. They gave off a soft, true rose scent. It wasn't overpowering and they really made my soak special. I think these would make a great stocking stuffer! They also offer a full line of sex toys for a real exciting stocking.

Look how pretty my tub looked....

There was even a whole rose included.

The petals slowly melted into the tub water leaving their soft fragrance in the water. They did not leave a heavy residue in the water or on me. I really enjoyed using them.
