Blog Tour and Book Review: A Reluctant Queen by Joan Wolf

About the Book:

An inspiring re-imagining of the tale of Esther, a young Jewish woman thrust from a life of obscurity into a life of power, wealth, intrigue . . . and tender love.

See the story of Esther in an entirely new way-with all the political intrigue and tension you remember, but told as a passionate and tender love story between a young man and woman. Misunderstood by many, King Xerxes was a powerful but lonely man. Esther's beauty caught the eye of the young king, but it was her spirit that captured his heart.

Imagine anew the story of Esther, one of our faith's great heroines, destined to play a key role in the history of Christianity.

My Opinion:  I knew nothing about the story of Esther before I read this book. As I got about three or four chapters in I decided to google the tale to see how the book linked to what the Bible told. I think that helped me in reading the story.

Esther is a young woman born of a Jewish mother and Persian father. Her mother has died so she is brought up by her Uncle Mordecai. Her uncle works for the Great King in the treasury department.  A close friend to the Great King, Haman hails from Palestine and wants to war against the Jews in the region. He is a man of overweening pride and great hatred. The Great King has put aside his first wife and is now searching the kingdom for a new bride. Mordecai and the elders decide that Esther should enter the harem and try to become that wife so she can convince the King not to war on the Jews.

Esther reluctantly agrees never suspecting that she will be picked. Her father was a lower noble than many of the other girls vying for the King's eye. But Esther is special and the King sees this and chooses her. The book breathes life into staid Biblical figures and gives them feelings and passion. Esther truly cares for all people including the ones who serve her and this is the passion that drives her. She changes the Great King with the way she thinks.

Haman sees the influence that Esther is having and gets jealous. He does not know that Mordecai is Esther's uncle - no one does. Esther has kept her religion a secret as she falls deeper in love with the Great King. Haman has now risen to the post of Grand Vizier and Mordecai won't bow to him. Haman is determined to take revenge against him and all of the Jews.

This is when Esther brings Haman and the Great King together to show the king Haman's overreach and to disclose her secret. Haman, who was planning to hang Mordecai is himself hanged on the same scaffold.

I enjoyed the book. I do have a love for Biblical fiction. This is a simple telling but a good read. It's a strong love story of a young woman sent to do something she really didn't want to do and yet she managed to become strong in her own right and a heroine to her people.
