Book #Review and #Giveaway: The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern
About the Book:
The circus arrives without warning. No announcements precede it. It is simply there, when yesterday it was not. Within the black-and-white striped canvas tents is an utterly unique experience full of breathtaking amazements. It is called Le Cirque des RĂªves, and it is only open at night.
But behind the scenes, a fierce competition is underway—a duel between two young magicians, Celia and Marco, who have been trained since childhood expressly for this purpose by their mercurial instructors. Unbeknownst to them, this is a game in which only one can be left standing, and the circus is but the stage for a remarkable battle of imagination and will. Despite themselves, however, Celia and Marco tumble headfirst into love—a deep, magical love that makes the lights flicker and the room grow warm whenever they so much as brush hands.
True love or not, the game must play out, and the fates of everyone involved, from the cast of extraordinary circus performers to the patrons, hang in the balance, suspended as precariously as the daring acrobats overhead.
Written in rich, seductive prose, this spell-casting novel is a feast for the senses and the heart.
About the Author:
ERIN MORGENSTERN is a writer and a multimedia artist, who describes all her work as "fairy tales in one way or another." She lives in Massachusetts with her husband and two very fluffy cats.
My Opinion:
The book arrived without warning. No announcements preceded it. It was simply there when yesterday it was not - although it was brought by a Big Brown Truck rather than a black and white train. But this reader was so very happy that it arrived.
The Night Circus is a special book. A book of magic and love and time and place. It's a story unlike anything I have ever read before and when I finished it I wanted to start it all over again knowing that I would find aspects that I missed on my first read.
It's a book ostensibly about a circus but it's also a tale of love. It's also a tale of power and abuse of power. Ms. Morgenstern has created a world unlike any other and put it smack dab in the middle of 19th century Europe and America through a traveling circus. But a very special circus open only at night and where everything is black and white.
The imagination involved to create the circus and the writing ability that allowed me to experience it in my head is just extraordinary. I felt like I was walking through the circus and exploring the tents. I was there; the calliope music was playing but it was not a tinny sound it was the sound of an orchestra.
The writing is lyrical, the characters magical (no pun intended) and the plot enthralling. I wish I had the words to fully express my joy at this book. My only complaint is that it wasn't long enough. It was a world I didn't want to leave. I have found my new favorite book of the year. I am keeping and I will read it again and again.

I think I went in my 20's. My kids have never seen a full fledged circus, only little ones. This book looks soooo interesting! THANKS for the good review and giveaway. Your favorite of the year? I'm curious to read it now!

I have never been to the circus :( I don't think they come here often and when they do I don't know about it until it is too late. I will get there one day though!

I don't actually think that I've ever been to a circus. They didn't usually come to my home town when I was a kid, and when I went to college I majored in zoology and we were warned against going to any circus that had animals.
I really want to read this book though.

I haven't been to the circus since i was a kid but I am desperate to take my son! Everything the circus comes it isn't announced very well in advanced and so far it seems to fall when we already have plans or are out of town :(.
My favorite part of the circus was always getting a big snow cone in a commemorative keepsack glass and getting to pick out a stuffed animal of my favorite creature!

I went to the circus when I was a child ...... 50 plus years ago.
I also took my daughter to the circus when she was a child. I'm hoping to take my two grandchildren to the circus in another year or two, when I think my grandson is old enough to enjoy it.

Gosh, it's been at least ten years. I keep wanting to take my son to one but most of those that come through our area are cruel to their animals, or are cirque du soleil which we just can't afford. :(

I haven't been to a circus in probably 25-30 years. (Who ever thought you would be old enough to say something like that!)

I think the last time I went was when I was a little girl in the '70s. My grandfather was a clown in the circus at the time. Seeing him holding his stomach in pain while the other clowns pulled fish out of his mouth traumatized me for years!
These days I boycott circuses, for the cruel conditions for the animals, but I would love to go see Cirque de Soleil someday!

It's been at least ten years since I've been to the circus. We used to take our girls when they were little. :)
Night Circus definitely has me wanting to go again though. Thank you for the chance to win a copy of this book. I can't wait to read it! :)
I would say it has been more than 15 years since I have been to the circus
I think the last time I went to a circus was when I was in first grade.

I went when I was about 14, so almost 4 years ago. & it was actually for work, I worked at a little stand in random places around town promoting this acting school I went to then. :) Going to those places was a pretty cool perk of the job anyway.
I'm sorry, forgot my email address. :o

My husband and I took our boys to the circus last month. I just love the circus. The expression on the face of my eight year old was priceless. My twelve year old enjoyed it also, but he is too cool to show us just how much. Lol.
