Ruminatin' - On the Weather
It's raining.
Again.
Yesterday there was some snow mixed in with the rain
It's APRIL.
I've about had it.
It's grey here.
I've about learned to accept that.
But this year has been a doozy.
It's been the greyest since we've moved here and I need more than two days of sun.
I sometimes think that when we get those glimpses of what Spring can be it's almost worse than not seeing the sun at all.
Because then you remember what it is like when the sun shines brightly and air is touched with just a bit of warmth.
You can hang your clothes out on the line.
You can open windows.
You see blue sky.
Then the grey rolls in again and you wonder if it was just a dream.
It is supposed to be nice tomorrow.
I hope so.
I need to know the grey will end.
Again.

Book Review: The Return of Black Douglas by Elaine Coffman
| Click to purchase at Sourcebooks |
About the Book:
New Scottish time travel romance written in response to reader demand by award winning and New York Times bestselling author Elaine Coffman (5 million books sold). When Isobella Douglas is pulled back in time by the ghost of her infamous ancestor The Black Douglas, she encounters a Highland laird who’s completely captivated by the modern lass...
About the Author:
Since the release of her first book in 1988, New York Times Bestselling author Elaine Coffman has helped define the historical romance genre. Elaine has received numerous awards, including the Romantic Times Reviewer’s Choice Award, Best Western Historical Romance of the Year and the Maggie Award. She is the author of twenty historical romance novels (Lord of the Black Isle is my 21st book), one suspense novel and four novellas’. She resides in Austin, Texas.
My Opinion:
I would like to start by saying that I love time travel books. To love time travel books one has to be able to let reality go. 'Cause time travel just doesn't happen. Nor do paintings come to life or any of the other things that tend to happen in this genre of novel. But that doesn't mean that the book can't still be grounded in some semblance of its own reality. The world outside of the time travel still has to make sense for the book to work. And that is where this book let me down.
The tale starts with the visit of twins Isobella and Elizabeth Douglas to Scotland to explore their ancestors. One of them is the famous "Black Douglas." Isobella has studied Celtic history and she wanted to know more about the past of her family. She had also just been dumped by her fiance; he ran off with their dance instructor! She wanted a Darcy but didn't think she'd ever find one in modern times. She felt she was born hundreds of years too late.
Erm, we all know what happens next, right? Both Isobella and Elizabeth are sent back into the past by their ancestor The Black Douglas to the 16th century. A bit before Mr. Darcy to say the least.
While I liked the characters and I enjoyed Ms. Coffman's writing there were just too many stupid plot points that spoiled the book for me. I don't want to go into them in detail because I don't want to ruin the book for anyone that reads it. Things that were obvious to the reader that just were ignored by the characters. Again, I realize that these books are inherently fantastic but there must be some sense of protocol. For example: The hero finds the two girls from the future in a field wearing 21st century clothing. He captures one of them but doesn't search her bag even though he thinks her a spy? Makes no sense...
This is just one of many small little things that helped to distract me from totally enjoying the story.

Review and #Giveaway: DedeMed's 7 Spices
Sponsored by Tomoson.com
Spice!
It adds so much to cooking.
Since I am a cook that loves to play in the kitchen I was more than excited to be offered the opportunity to review my choice from DedeMed Mediterranean Kitchen's pantry.
Oooh, the choices! It was tough but I now have in my creative little hands a lovely bottle of DedeMed's 7 Spices. I thought this would be an excellent choice because it could be used with both sweet and savory dishes. I was torn with where to go first but I had chicken out for dinner the day it arrived and my little brain went into overdrive with a very simple application that would do the aromatic spices justice.
But first a bit about DedeMed. The website is a treasure trove of knowledge and video recipes to help someone learn more about Mediterranean and middle Eastern cooking. If you have never ventured into this part of the world's cuisine you are missing out! It is just about my favorite type of food to eat and to cook. It's healthy and delicious.
Now back to my experiment! As I said I had some chicken out for that night's dinner. I put some extra virgin olive oil in a bowl and tossed the chicken in.
Then I added a very generous sprinkling of the DedeMed 7 Spices and some salt. I let that sit and marinate for about half an hour.
I baked the chicken in a 350° oven for about 45 minutes. These are home butchered chickens (sorry for the squeamish but this IS a farm after all) and they don't look as nice and white as store bought chickens. I am also not the world's best chicken cutter-upper.
I then heated up my grill pan to give them a little extra smoky flavor.
While the chicken was baking I made some orange couscous which I thought would go nicely with the spiced chicken. I put a mix of orange juice and water in a pan with some raisins. I know you can't see them, but trust me they are in there.
I also toasted some pine nuts. When the orange water hit a boil I dropped in a cup of couscous and turned off the heat. I covered it and let it sit until I was ready for it.
I was serving the ever present green bean as the vegetable - the man grew a LOT of green beans last year! I simply roasted them in the oven with a touch of olive oil and salt. When I was ready to serve I fluffed up the couscous with a fork. I topped it with the toasted pine nuts.
It was delicious. The chicken had a lovely flavor from all of the spices. They didn't overpower the meat, they just added an exotic taste that was very welcome. We both enjoyed it and I know this spice blend will also taste good on lamb. I can also imagine a variation on a snickerdoodle using the DedeMed 7 Spices instead of cinnamon.
Thanks to the generous folks at DedeMed one lucky reader will get to win their own bottle of 7 Spices! Just think of the fun you will have!

Blog Tour and Book Review: Promised Valley Rebellion by Ron Fritsch
About the Book:
Prehistoric farmers inhabit a fertile river valley they believe their gods promised them in return for their good behavior and obedience. Their enemies, hunters roaming the mostly barren hills beyond the mountains enclosing the valley, believe their gods gave it to them.
When the farmers’ king refuses to allow the marriage of the coming-of-age prince to the daughter of the farmer who saved the king’s life in the last war with the hunters, her brother decides he has to help his sister and the prince, his boyhood friend, correct the flagrant injustice.
When the farmers’ king refuses to allow the marriage of the coming-of-age prince to the daughter of the farmer who saved the king’s life in the last war with the hunters, her brother decides he has to help his sister and the prince, his boyhood friend, correct the flagrant injustice.
That decision leads them and their youthful allies into a rebellion against the king and his officials, who rule the kingdom from their bluff-top town. The far more numerous farmers in the villages below, who despise the officials but not the king, and who admire the prince, are in a position to determine whether the rebels will succeed or face execution for treason.
About the Author:
Ron grew up in rural northern Illinois. His father and mother were poor but hard-working tenant farmers who loved to read. So did the rest of the family.
Planting and harvesting, they lived by the seasons as much as our prehistoric ancestors had.
Planting and harvesting, they lived by the seasons as much as our prehistoric ancestors had.
Because he inherited the gift of a good memory he obtained a bachelor’s degree with honors from the University of Illinois (major: history; minor: English literature) and a law degree cum laude from Harvard Law School.
Early in his career, the persons in charge of the prestigious law firm where I worked became aware that I was gay. They’d insisted to him how “liberal” they were, but he soon realized—beyond the veil of a “farm boy” innocence he’d willfully kept in place too long—they were apparently still very much stuck in their times.
After his abrupt dismissal from the upper reaches of the legal profession, he became a public-service attorney representing indigent and disabled persons, and—at the end and most challenging part of his work—abused and neglected children.
All during his life as a lawyer, he spent most of his time writing arguments on behalf of his clients, in the trial courts as well as the higher appeals courts. Despite his careful legal reasoning, which he considered my trump card, he wasn’t above resorting to sarcasm and ridicule—sometimes, perhaps, excessively.
He’s writing and publishing a tetralogy asking whether history and civilization might’ve begun and proceeded differently than they did. He’s doing it not because he hopes to become rich and famous but because he wishes to share his story with the world.
For more information about Ron, you can visit his website at www.promisedvalley.com
My Opinion:
This is a tough one. I enjoyed the story and the mythology of the peoples but the names! The names drove me nigh on insane. It was so hard to keep track of Blue Eyes and Peaceful Harvest let alone remember which one was male or female. OY! Perhaps it was just too much for my old brain. Maybe if I had read it before the aneurysm sent my memory down the tubes - I don't know. But all the trying to keep track of who was who and which was which truly detracted from the basic story for me.
The story is age old; love thwarted for reasons unknown. To the elders keeping the lovers apart it is all for good reasons. To the lovers and their supporters there is no logical reason for them to be kept apart. No logical explanations are given and THEY ARE IN LOVE!
The book sets up the next in a planned set of four books detailing a possible start to civilization. I am just glad I am not named Bad Brain.

Review: POM Cranberry Juice
I was lucky enough to taste test POM Wonderful last year - my review is HERE. They have come out with a new flavor! POM Cranberry and I was sent some to try. Mmmm, more POM!
I adore the color of POM Cranberry! It is such a gorgeous shade of deep, rich red. It is also mighty tasty! Delicious and tart; you get the bite of the cranberry and depth of the pomegranate. It is not sweet but it is not bitter either. This is definitely an adult's drink. I loved it and so did the hubby. And the bottles are just so darn cute!
I also wanted to cook with the POM. It's what I do...in fact the POM Wonderful site is chock full of great recipes to try with all the POMs. Check them out - there are appetizers, entrees, desserts and more!
I wanted to make a sauce for a leg of lamb. I put some POM Cranberry in my pot and then went to work spicing it up.
I added some star anise, coriander seeds, mustard seeds, whole allspice, and a cinnamon stick. I didn't measure, I just tossed 'em in. I let this simmer for a bit.
Then I thought it needed a kick...
BOURBON! Bourbon always adds a bit of a kick.
heh
I let it cook a bit longer and then I thickened it up with a bit of a flour slurry. Then a pat of butter for a bit of shine.
Then I added the juices from the resting roast.
I strained it and put it in a pitcher to wait for dinner.
I sliced up the lamb and served it with some spinach for the hubby, beans for me and rice for both of us.
I would say he loved it...
....wouldn't you?
The sauce was delicious! It held onto the tart flavor of the POM Cranberry and held up to the rich taste of the lamb.

Book Review: Hybrid by Dr. Brian O'Grady
About the Book:
Seven years ago, everyone died in the Honduran camp from the EDH1 virus, but Red Cross worker Amanda Flynn. Airlifted home to America, medical professionals tried to identify why Amanda survived when others died gruesome, agonizing deaths or became violent savages. Little did they know that anyone who survived…changed.
Since her escape from quarantine, Amanda has been in hiding slowly realizing the powers that could have only come from her infection. She can sense things, do things using her mind, things that are incredible and sometimes incredibly dark. But as she resists the pull toward violence, a new survivor has entered her consciousness – one without her willpower to block evil impulses. One who revels in bloodlust and seeks to expand his mastery by forcing the end of human society. And he’s coming for Amanda.
A sharply written and engaging cast of characters adds to the fever excitement and suspense – Dr. Phil Rucker, the coroner whose Asperger’s syndrome comes complete with its own demons; Father John Oliver, the kindly priest whose faith is brutally tested; Rodney Patton, the homicide chief who sees what others miss; and Greg Flynn, Amanda’s father-in-law and the man whose moral center guides others in the storm.
About the Author:
Brian O’Grady (www.brianjogrady.com) follows in the tradition of Michael Crichton as a physician who brings his in-depth medical knowledge to his craft. A practicing neurosurgeon, O’Grady is a graduate of the University of New Mexico who completed his residency in neurosurgery at the Mayo Clinic. His deep insight into the mysterious workings of the human brain brings HYBRID realistically to life.
My Opinion:
Oooooh, wild and crazy book. Very thought provoking. Scary.
Biological warfare is one of the concerns that is always buzzing below the surface in the world in which we live. This book explores the effects of releasing a virus into the population. But this is not just any virus - in the people that survive it special powers develop. It's how those people learn and develop that create the core story.
As always there is a battle of good against evil - in this case the evil is supplied by a rather undefined Islamic (?) terrorist group. Or was it a group of billionaires? Or were the billionaires manipulating the terrorists? To me this was the most confusing part of the book; I was not really sure but it almost didn't seem to matter since there was a completely evil individual to carry the bulk of the story. He played nicely against the conflicted heroine, Amanda. She was as affected by the virus but her better instincts ruled her life so she learned to control her new manifestation and move forward in a mostly positive way.
There are other characters, well developed that help in the battle against the virus. There is also a rather odd naval battle with Iran that I just didn't understand - it seemed unnecessary to the plot and tossed in for some kind of bizarre topical side event. Despite that odd departure from the main story line I really did enjoy the book. It was hard to put down and in fact I found myself reading the last chapter into the early morning hours. The ending is satisfying but does leave the door open, if you ask me, for more stories about the infected ones.
If you are looking for a thrilling suspense tale, this one will satisfy despite a few odd jogs here and there.
