My NOOK is dead.
Uh-huh.
The NOOK I so looked forward to and recommended so highly is now dead.
After less than two years of really, really light use.
I am NOT happy.
Seriously NOT HAPPY.
It all started when I wanted to download a book.
Earth shattering concept for a NOOK, eh?
It would not download to my device.
I spent an hour last night with live chat on Barnesandnoble.com
After much useless conversation it was decided I should un-register then re-register my NOOK.
I was told that all my B&N books would be retained.
This turned out to be untrue.
As I was un-registering and re-registering my NOOK my live chat was suspended due to inactivity. Gee, I guess I can't type fast enough on a slow moving e-reader to keep live chat happy. I could not get back into live chat because they were too busy. I was encouraged to try back later.
Uh-huh.
I called this morning and spent half an hour with another customer service rep who determined that I did not have the correct software. If I downloaded the correct software all would be well. Why it had not updated automatically since it is a Wi-Fi she could not answer. It would take 13 minutes for the software to download so I hung up and followed the instructions on the B&N site. The software downloaded and all was supposed to be well.
Riiiiiight.
I called back and got another rep. After explaining all I had been through he tried to make me do it all over again. I asked if he had even listened to what I had just said? He then told me that there was nothing more to be done but that he could offer me a discount on a new NOOK.
WHAT?!
A piece of electronics that was less than two years old and minimally used was now unable to purchase or download my existing B&N library?!
I was seriously not happy.
AND HE EXPECTED ME TO PURCHASE ANOTHER?
He was out of his mind.
I am NOT out of mine. The hubby took over as he has a less emotional, more logical lawyer's mind and talked to a supervisor who told him that there was nothing to be done. So we are done with Barnes and Noble.
Hubby is investigating tablets for me.
I guess I will be moving up in the world.
I am so extremely disappointed in the appalling lack of concern and customer service from Barnes and Noble. I recognize that it is out of warranty - but seriously! - for an expensive piece of electronics (we bought this when they were just getting popular) to lose this fuctionality in such a short time when I doubt I have 40 hours of use on it is just ridiculous.
So goodbye NOOK.
I look forward to a much better e-reader/tablet in my future.
I will be buying my books from any other provider than Barnes and Noble in the future.
Hey Google? Hey Amazon?
Want an honest review of the Nexus 7? The Kindle Fire?

I've had to deregister and reregister my nook with no issues due to me thinking it was stolen at the gym where I left it and had to blacklist the thing then get it undone from the blacklist and deregister and reregister. Sounds like yours just needs a proper upgrade and it should work. You can also convert it into a fully functional android system instead of buying a new one if you don't want to fix it. There are directions on the android forum site if you're inclined. Have you tried taking it into a store for them to try to fix it?
Oh, that is disappointing and frustrating. The only thing worse than a shoddy product is shoddy customer service. I hope you have better luck with the other options. I have a Kindle, but a very simple version. I love that darn thing.
blueyes: the nearest store is an hour and a half away and we don't go down to there that often. I've done the upgrade per their instructions. It now has the latest software and it still won't let me download books.
After close to two and half hours with customer service and two supervisors I don't hold out much hope.
Grrr, how frustrating!I hope you a can get a new, different brand one for review.
That sucks! The NOOK and all of your books gone just like that. Get a Kindle. I have not tried the latest ones but we have three different models at home and could not be happier with them. The $69 one should be great for reading.
I could only afford the cheapest Kindle, no problems so far. Think I have had it for two years. Condolences!
My husband and I have Kindles and love them. We recently bought our daughter one for her birthday. Hope you can find the right reader for you.
Sorry it's been so frustrating! Your Nook books should still be on your account, though. Not too comforting when you can't get the Nook to work, but you haven't lost them forever. I work at a library with both Kindles and Nooks, and my experience has been Barnes & Noble's customer service is a dream. Amazon's is a nightmare -- every single time you contact them, you deal with a new person who tells you things you already know, and there's no way to respond to any email. So I guess all companies need to work on their "customer no service" (as Clark Howard would say!).
I have 2 Kindles, the fire and the 3G one. My buddy has a new Nexus, and my folks have 2 other Kindles, the Touch and the $79 dollar one. If you want a tablet, get the Nexus. If you want an e-reader, try the new Kindle Paperwhite. I'm not impressed with the Fire as a tablet.
OH yes my bosses bought me the nook 2 Christmas ago. It was a nightmare with customer service all I got where nice ppl in India but we couldn't understand each other. After 2 days of trying to get it set up I gave up, thankfully my bosses bought one for their daughter also and was having the same problems. I got a nice Ipad out of it.
Sorry :(
I have a Kindle fire. If you don't need internet, go with a less expensive reader. I had used an IPad of my son's before getting the Fire. One thing, the Ipad & Nooks have the charging cable that detaches & hooks to your computer for downloads, but with the Kindle, I had to buy a separate cable.
I haven't had any issues with Amazon & so far am happy with all the free books I have gotten.
I am still learning all that the Kindle Fire does...had to get a book to help me!
Hope you can get your Nook fixed, and as Lisanne624 said, you should be able to retrieve your library. (and yea Clark Howard!) Unless you go with another brand of reader, then I don't know if you can.
Good luck!
I quit Barnes and Noble the day I tried to download a free ebook onto my computer and it kept trying to charge my card.
Sorry to hear about your issues. Customer service is not what it should be.
