Here in the Broken Teepee household we try our best to live an eco-friendly lifestyle. It was a commitment we made when we moved onto our little farm and started looking for a house to build. We chose the yurt for it's design and made it as environmentally friendly as possible by choosing to install lots of windows for passive solar,bamboo flooring, low VOC paint, all wood cabinets, Marmoleum flooring and many other small choices that have left us with a house that doesn't off-gas nasty chemical smells and doesn't need a lot of energy to heat.
Some of the other personal choices we have made include using products that are friendly to the environment like those from Seventh Generation™. I had long been using their dish soap before I was contacted about their collaboration with Real Simple magazine for the Cleanhouse Challenge. What is that you ask? Well, I'm going to tell you!
The Cleanhouse Challenge is an interactive game where you go to the website and visit each room in the virtual house. I was sent a box o'Seventh Generation™ to use. As I mentioned above, I was already using their dish soap. I was sent their new Hand Care Formula which has HerbaVera™ moisture in it. It was lovely to use to wash dished but I have to say that I really don't like the bottle it is in. This is also a new design and it is not convenient to use. It requires two hands or a very co-ordinated one hand and that just didn't work for me. I much prefer the standard design where you pick the bottle up and squeeze; with this design you had to lift the cap and then squeeze and if you didn't have the cap out of the way the soap got all over the cap and made a mess. As to the soap itself - it worked very well. Lots of nice bubbles and it did an excellent job of cleaning - even with my soap making. That requires serious grease cutting and this soap did a great job!
I was also sent the Natural Laundry Detergent Packs. Another new product from Seventh Generation™. I tried them with all of my different laundry needs; sheets and towels, nasty, dirty husband type laundry and my goat clothes. I was very pleased with how everything came out of the washer. All clothes were clean and left with a fresh smell. You just toss one pack in with your dirty clothes (two if they are especially dirty) and set your machine. They work in both HE and regular washing machines (I have a front loading HE.)

Hmmm, where do I start? Eco-friendly cleaning and laundry, organic diary and produce, no paper towels, recycling and keeping trash to a minimum. There's more but I'll stop now.
We always recycle and I only use natural cleaning products and try to buy organic.

We recycle more than most since we go beyond traditional paper and plastic recycling. We use the leftover coffee grounds in our gardening. When we groom our standard poodles we leave the fur outside for the birds to use as bedding in nests (they love it by the way). We take old bedding and blankets to the shelter for them to make bedding for the new animals that come in. There's more, but those are just a few things.

Besides the CFL light bulbs, etc. that most people use, I really try to use natural skin/hair care products. Also, use natural cleaning products like vinegar and baking soda when I can.
One of the bigger things we've done is to stop using products with toxic chemicals in them. We've switched to natural cleaning products, laundry & dish products, personal care products, etc. The interesting thing is that we've noticed a huge difference in how we feel (no more headaches or congestion).

Composting, recycling, rain barrels, etc. Also, I only use natural ingredients such as vinegar and baking soda for household cleaning. They work great and are much cheaper!
